LYRICS

Lady Bird: Oh hi darling.  I’m so glad you’re home.  I was wondering –

LBJ: Bird!  Did you make a steak?

Lady Bird: What? I made a casserole.  Dear I -

LBJ: A casserole?!  Mr. Rayburn’s coming over in 1 hour.  You know he likes steak!

Lady Bird:  I’m sorry dar, I didn’t -

LBJ: And you get this place cleaned up.

I got to go back to the capitol.  I got papers to collect.

And then I got a meeting and then I’ll finally be back here.

And then – have that steak ready, god damnit

Lady Bird: I will dear, I promise.  But when you come back, I want to talk about -

LBJ: Alright, gotta go now. Steak!

Lady Bird: …having a child.

(Door slams)

Lady Bird:

Even now

When he is gone

All the hard things that he said still linger on.

Even now, I know the door will one day open up for him and he’ll find more.

CHORUS

I am painting watercolors in the rain

And if my marks all fade

Then I can shade my pain

The seasons change

And the earth spins as it should

But I end each summer standing where I stood.

LBJ: Even now

Past 7 years

Can’t get a single bill I fought far past their sneers.

Even now I sing my song

I know that every road I take will take too long

CHORUS
I am painting watercolors in the rain

And if I leave no mark

Then how will explain

That I’m just not climbing as fast as I should

As I end each summer standing where I stood?

Lady Bird:

And even now I watch him rise

I long for so more than his elusive prize (LBJ: Bird whey can’t you be more pretty?)

Even now he’s so spun (LBJ: Bird – I’ll be home in 20 minutes!)

He can’t make time to have a daughter or a son (LBJ: Don’t you burn the dinner like last time!)

CHORUS
I am painting watercolors in the rain.

Washed out reflections of rejections and campaigns.

As I walk past the children in our neighborhood,

I end each summer standing where I stood.

And even now past 7 years

He’s not bothered by my soft and frequent tears

LBJ: And even now her eyes avert

She only hears the things I tell her that won’t hurt

Lady Bird and LBJ:

We are painting watercolors in the rain

We know if nothing lasts, there’s nothing to explain

And even now when life is good

We end each summer standing where I stood.
