Lying in a hospital bed and facing his mortality in the face of a massive heart attack, Johnson is ready to resign from the senate and drop out of politics for good. Before he can announce this to the press, Lady Bird puts her hand over his mouth and announces that not only is he staying on as a senator, but he will be running for president. As the reporters leave, Johnson tells Bird he can't go on. He's been a terrible politician and for that matter, a terrible husband. For the first time, he acknowledges his infidelity and lets her know he would understand if she left him right then and there. Bird politely tells him to shut up and sings him this song, encapsulating her forgiveness, loyalty and love.
